By now, you’ve probably heard about the controversial report that recommended scaling back mammography testing. The question, though, is how have you and your hospital been handling it?

As online healthcare marketers, we are certainly in no position to support or defend the report, but we are very qualified to recognize hospitals that are skillfully handling this delicate subject.

One standout is the Medical University of South Carolina—yes, the same MUSC that we mentioned earlier this month for their award-winning Website that we designed.

Not only did MUSC make a mention of this hot issue, but they also made multiple mentions that provided both objectivity and subjectivity—and are using the most appropriate media to do so:

Home page: MUSC’s home page makes a bold mention, front and center: “Hollings Cancer Center Responds to New Mammogram Guidelines,” which links to a…

Page dedicated toNew Mammogram Guidelines”: Along with briefly stating their position about mammography testing, the page provides several relevant links (“Calculate Your Brest Cancer Risk,” “Search Breast Cancer Clinic Trials,” etc.), it includes an invitation for visitors to tell MUSC what they think at a…

Blog whereMUSC Responds to New Mammography Recommendations”, which was also promoted/distributed with a…

Tweet to their social media community (and beyond).

This funnel is a textbook example of how a hospital used its Website, blog and social media to:

• Immediately address an important healthcare issue.

• Attract and direct patients towards relevant hospital services.

• Initiate a forum in which to engage the community’s opinions and concerns.

• Leverage the opportunity to expose their online presence, quite possibly to first-time visitors.

Well played, MUSC, well played.
