The FTC and Social Media: Don’t Lie to Your Mama!

When you were a kid, the small lies that you told your mama to get out of trouble might have worked—or at least you might have thought they did!mama

Unfortunately, the same small lies will not work when it comes to healthcare and pharmaceutical social media.

Effective October 2009 (and with further requirements being enforced as December 1, 2009), the FTC will no longer tolerate lying, cheating or stupidity from organizations that use social media to deceptively market their brands.

When it comes to having an effective (and now legal) social media campaign, ethics is no longer an option; it is the law (see the full version at the FTC Website).

Here is a summary of what you need to do to protect your brand—or risk being canned when the owner of your company is fined for your mistake:

• Create social media policies and guidelines for your company

• Explicitly require truthfulness in all social media messages

• Advise employees of the severe penalties from the FTC

Monitor your hospital’s social media conversations and immediately correct mistakes

So, listen to your mama and tell the truth!
